The minimalist parent

One thing we are really keen to do with our parenting is to keep the number of items we buy and amount of new items for a number of reasons including:

  1. We do not have a big house and we have a lot of our own items already which mean a lot.
  2. We don’t like the chemicals used in new items, particularly cheaper things with plastics and timber products like MDF.
  3. We like to buy second-hand because it’s sustainable and far cheaper.
  4. We don’t want our kids to have endless toys, we like the idea of having a smaller number and encouraging their creativity through more outdoor play.

Having said that, you can’t have a baby and not buy some things. We are going to be using cloth nappies as well as other reusable and washable products. Of course, being new parents means being open to the experience and going with the flow but underpinning our decisions will be our values.
